Functional appliances are used to treat skeletal discrepancies in younger patients at critical growth milestones. Issuing the Twin Block appliance for underbite correction, the Herbst Appliance, which helps reposition the jaw with no effort from the patient, and the Bionator, which is a removable appliance that assists in aligning the jaw and bite, are all examples of functional appliances.
Extraoral appliances are used to provide external support in the treatment of severe jaw and bite alignment discrepancies. These include headgear, which controls the growth of the upper jaw and movement of the teeth used to move the upper jaw forward in cases of crossbite or underdevelopment.
